PE

What is the curriculum trying to achieve?

At The Downs School, the PE faculty educates our students for the world of tomorrow.  Whether students continue their study of sports or not, we ensure that all students develop healthy habits that stay with them for life. Involvement in sports develops the physical, mental and social well-being of each individual student.  This is important not only academically, but also in terms of ensuring that they become rounded, happy individuals.

The PE faculty is passionate about ensuring that every student leaves us having experienced the joy and exhilaration of both individual and team sports.Sporting values are taught throughout all activities to create an atmosphere of integrity, equality and fair play. Our ambitious and creative curriculum follows the National Curriculum.  It is designed to ensure a culture of self-belief, that enables all students to develop the ability to be courageous and resilient with their learning and to understand that taking part is just as important as winning. Opportunities to make mistakes are built into the lessons to teach and challenge all students to embrace failure to learn and progress.

We offer a wide variety of sporting and extra-curricular opportunities, so that all students can reach their full potential within PE. They achieve success both by learning about the theory and science of sports, and through performing, officiating and/or coaching. We promote and develop responsible students by proactively weaving student leadership activities throughout our curriculum.

How do we organise learning?

Each of our subjects organises learning to achieve our federation vision of ‘Educating today’s students for the world of tomorrow: a seamless education from 4 to 19’.  Please click here to see a visual map of students’ planned ‘learning journey’ in PE across Key Stage 3, 4 and 5.
