I hope you all had a restful and healthy Christmas and New year. In my welcome back assembly on Wednesday I talked about the importance of achieving a healthy work-life balance in 2023, rather than just focussing on how hard you will need to work. I talked through strategies that could help students when they feel overwhelmed and stressed, and encouraged them to create a stress toolkit that works for them. As we enter the New Year, we have plenty to look forward to and work towards in the coming weeks. I to take this opportunity to welcome to our new staff:

At the end of last term, we were able to hold our first presentation evening since 2019 and I must say it was it was a wonderful way to mark the end of another successful term. This has always been one of the highlights of my year and it is a huge privilege once again to be celebrating the successes of our talented and inspirational young people. When you consider how challenging the last couple of years have been, their achievements are truly phenomenal; they all epitomise our CREARCI values – which are:
Courage; Responsibility; Equality; Ambition; Resilience; Creativity; Integrity

Enrichment at TDS As part of the new exciting enrichment programme the science faculty decided as one of their projects to bring together the expertise of our sixth form students, matched with the enthusiasm of our year 5 and 6 pupils from Compton CofE Primary School. The excellent sixth form group started the year by planning and trialling different experiments. They eventually created a lesson involving a series of hands-on experiments to help our guests to solve a mystery using their skills as both detectives and scientists. The younger students learned to describe chemical reactions, create their own chromatograms and also separate mixtures using magnetism, filtration and evaporation. A superb time was had by all, and we cannot wait to welcome our new scientists back in the near future. Here is some of the feedback from the Year 5 and 6 students: ‘I’d like to say thank you, to Miss Parry, for teaching us! I really enjoyed your lesson! I would also like to thank all of the Sixth Formers, for helping us, especially Alex and Ramya, who helped my group! It was a wonderful experience!’ ‘The six formers were really great at helping and encouraged others and myself to have a go. I never knew how to use professional equipment like this so it was a great experience! ‘ ‘This had been an amazing experience, full of fun and excitement. What a super interesting investigation we had! I would definitely jump at any chance I have to go again and am looking forward to Miss Parry coming to our school!’ ‘Our visit has ignited my excitement and anticipation to come back and to become a scientist’ |

Health Guidance On the issues of health, the UK Health Security Agency has issued some helpful advice to parents/carers on how you can help to ensure that your child doesn’t catch and spread winter illnesses. This advice has been issued in response to high levels of flu, COVID 19 and Scarlet Fever. You can read the full guidance here. Specifically, the guidance says:
