Challenge for allTheDownsSchoolJuly2018 100

The Downs School Sixth Form’s academic success is based on exceptional teaching, high expectations and highly motivated students

Downs IconsThe Structure of the Sixth Form Day

There are 5 periods a day.
Sixth formers attend morning registration from 8.50am to 9.05am in their tutor group.
We have 20 minutes for break and 40 minutes for lunch.
The school day ends at 3.15pm

Entry Requirements

Catchment areas do not apply in the Sixth Form, nor are we restricted on the numbers of students we are able to offer places to.
We are therefore able to provide places to many students who attended other schools before they joined The Downs School Sixth Form, and have been notably successful at integrating students from other schools into the Sixth Form community.
Typically, 25% of our Sixth Form students join us from schools other than The Downs School.
We run a wide variety of events, such as the Sixth Form open evening that are designed to showcase our school to students and parents considering whether or not they wish to join The Downs.

19Dress Code

Sixth Formers do not wear a school uniform. We have a dress code, which provides a professional, work-focused environment in the Sixth Form.
We have Dress Down Friday each week, which allows Sixth Formers to have a more casual approach to their dress on Fridays.

Attitude to Learning

We expect our students to have a professional approach to learning and have a dress code that ensures our students have the same high standards of personal appearance as our members of staff.
Our expectations for attendance and organisation are also high.
Our students understand the importance of independent learning to consolidate what they have learned in the classroom.
We therefore provide a library and a variety of study rooms in which students work independently.

Bus Transport

Some spaces are available for students in catchment area through West Berkshire Council.
