Back to News ListSpanish Language Trip to Murcia, Spain 2025
Posted on: 13th OctLast week, a group of our Year 8 and 9 students enjoyed an unforgettable trip to southern Spain as part of our Spanish Language and Culture programme. The visit gave pupils the chance to put their classroom learning into practice and to experience the sights, sounds and spirit of Spain first-hand.
The group travelled to Murcia, a beautiful and historic region known for its sunny climate, welcoming people and rich culture. Over several days, students immersed themselves in Spanish life, exploring local towns, trying traditional food, visiting the beaches and practising their language skills with locals.
Highlights of the trip included a salsa lesson on the beach, a boat trip, watersports including kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. They ordered ice cream at a shop in Spanish and their evening activities including spanish karaoke and swimming in the sea. The confidence they gained from speaking the language in real situations was remarkable, and it was wonderful to see how much progress they made in just a few days.
Beyond the language learning, there were so many special moments, fun on the coach, evening walks through Spanish streets, and new friendships formed across year groups. The students were a credit to the school throughout the trip, showing curiosity, kindness and respect wherever they went.
Our staff were equally proud of the way everyone embraced the experience. Travelling abroad together always brings lessons that go beyond the classroom; independence, teamwork and appreciation of different cultures and this trip was no exception.
A huge thank you to the Languages Department for their organisation and enthusiasm, and to the staff who accompanied the students and made sure everything ran smoothly. Most of all, thank you to our fantastic students for representing The Downs School so brilliantly.
It was a wonderful few days in Spain, and memories that we’re sure will stay with everyone for a long time to come.
