Students Tackle Global Climate Challenge with Industry Experts at The Downs School

Students at The Downs School & Sixth Form, Berkshire explored the world of environmental innovation during a cross-curricular Sustainability Day, supported by industry partner OceanMind, a leading NGO dedicated to protecting the ocean and tackling global emissions.

The day formed part of the school’s annual Cross-Curricular programme, where students step away from their normal timetable to focus on a single theme. Students in Years 8 and 9 worked in teams to study real-time emissions data from Climate TRACE, a global initiative co-founded by Al Gore and supported by OceanMind. Using this data, they developed practical ideas to help reduce emissions across sectors such as agriculture, transport and energy.

OceanMind’s Chief Executive, Nick Wise, attended the event with two colleagues. They gave an inspiring keynote presentation and worked alongside students throughout the day. The students’ solutions were later shared in a showcase finale, with the OceanMind team acting as judges.

Alongside the data-led work, students also took part in creative and hands-on activities including a wax wrap workshop, a team-building energiser and an upcycled fashion show, which highlighted innovation in sustainable design.

Nick Wise, CEO of OceanMind, said:
“It was fantastic to see young people so engaged in data-led problem solving and sustainability. They showed real creativity and critical thinking, which is exactly the kind of approach the planet needs. We are looking forward to continuing our collaboration with The Downs School and supporting students to develop the skills and knowledge that can make a real difference.”

Helen Hicks, Sustainability Lead at The Downs School, added:
“Working with an industry sponsor like OceanMind gave this project genuine real-world relevance. Students could clearly see how their ideas linked to careers and to global change-making. This is only the start, and we are keen to build on the event and develop an ongoing partnership.”

Headteacher Chris Prosser commented:
“Cross-Curricular Days give students the chance to explore important themes from every angle, whether scientific, creative or ethical. Sustainability sits at the heart of our school values, and it is inspiring to watch our students leading the way with such purpose and enthusiasm.”
