LR Eco Schools Award The Downs School Autumn 2025 2 2

We are delighted to share that our school’s Eco-Club has been awarded the Schools Green Flag Award with Distinction, recognising the dedication and thought our students have invested in caring for their environment.

The award is part of the Eco‑Schools programme, which encourages young people to lead sustainability work in schools, following a clear seven-step framework. The framework helps schools review their habits, set targets, take action and measure impact, so that positive changes are organised and meaningful.

Our students have continued to grow a committed and thoughtful Eco-Club carried out an Environmental Review of the school’s use of energy, water and waste, and created an Action Plan based on what they found. Their work linked directly to classroom learning, giving students the opportunity to connect sustainability to everyday subjects, conversations and decisions.

The club made sure that the wider school community was involved too, sharing ideas, encouraging participation and celebrating progress together. They monitored results and evaluated the impact.

To be awarded the Green Flag with Distinction means that our students did more than complete tasks. It means they showed pride in their work, consistency in action and responsibility towards the school community.

We would like to thank our students most of all. They have led, persisted, questioned, designed, planted seedlings, powered down laptops, turned off lights and inspired adults to do better too. Sustainability is stronger when young people carry the ideas forward, and our pupils have demonstrated that beautifully.

This recognition reminds us that small routines, repeated by hundreds of hands, create real change. Well done everyone!
