Year 12 Spanish Language Trip to British Film Institute Jan 2026

Posted on: 19th Jan

Year 12 Spanish students travelled to London to take part in a specialist study day focused on the work of renowned Spanish film director Pedro Almodóvar. The event provided an excellent introduction to the key themes and stylistic features of Almodóvar’s films. Delivered mainly in Spanish, the morning session included a clip-based presentation exploring his narrative themes, character archetypes, visual style, influences, casting choices and use of intertextuality.

A particular focus was placed on Volver (2006), one of the set films for A Level Spanish. Students analysed key scenes in depth and were supported in developing high-level textual analysis skills, helping to build confidence with film terminology and critical discussion in Spanish. In the afternoon, students watched a full screening of Volver, introduced by the speakers, allowing them to consolidate their understanding of the film and its themes.

The trip was a valuable and enriching experience, giving students greater insight into Spanish cinema while supporting their exam preparation and wider cultural knowledge.
