Posted on: 14th May 2026UK Maths Trust (UKMT) Junior Maths Challenge
The UKMT Junior Mathematical Challenge is a national competition designed to stretch and inspire young mathematicians through creative problem-solving and logical thinking. Students begin with the Junior Maths Challenge, where high scorers can progress to the Junior Kangaroo round and, for the very top performers nationally, the prestigious Junior Mathematical Olympiad. Success in the competition is not just about being good at maths, but about resilience, curiosity and learning to approach problems in different ways. Practising past papers and developing confidence with mathematical reasoning are often the key ingredients to achieving a Gold certificate or progressing through the later rounds.
We were so proud of all the Year 7 & 8 Mathematicians who got involved in this annual Maths Challenge!

James W got a Gold Award and was 'Best In Year'. Six additional students were only 1 off the boundary for the next award. James A was awarded 'Best In School' and a Gold Award. Six students were only 1 or 2 marks off the next boundary so a fabulous result all round.
This year we have 4 qualifiers for the follow on Kangaroo round and bizarrely they are all called James!!
Mr Whatley, what's the probability of that happening?!
