Posted on: 23rd Jul 2026The most meaningful change happens when people come together with purpose, and that’s exactly what has been happening at The Downs School. The support through match funding from PFCF Parry Family Charitable Foundation a grant making charity has meant that the funds raised by these groups of students have made and real difference to local charities.
For the second year running, it’s been a genuine privilege to work alongside such a committed, thoughtful, and energetic group of young people. Their ability to collaborate, organise, and deliver tangible support for local causes is evident as you will read.
In the autumn of 2024, the first group of Year 10 students turned their efforts towards Swings & Smiles | Support for Disabled Children a local charity who supports disabled children and their families. This determined team of students, working together for a common goal brought enthusiasm and fun to a project that made a real difference to the children who relish the time they spend at their fun filled centre in Thatcham.

More recently, a second group of students decided to focus on Newbury Soup Kitchen , where that same energy was channelled into tackling the very real challenges of homelessness and food poverty. Through creative fundraising which captured the imagination of the whole school community, this team of service minded individuals approached the project with care, determination, and a clear sense of the impact they could make together. You can explore more about this homelessness focussed charity here on their website Newbury Soup Kitchen - Homeless Charity, Social Service & Client Support and in this year’s project report “From Pot Noodles to Purpose” Pot Noodles and feeding the Homeless - Parry Family Charitable Foundation
Across both projects, what stands out is not just what the students achieved, but how they achieved it: together. Their willingness to step up, take ownership, and support others speaks volumes.
We’re excited to see where this partnership goes next and which local cause will be in the spotlight next year.
