Drama Documentary Workshops - Aberfan Disaster

Posted on: 30th Sep 2026

Yesterday we had the honour of a visit from Professor Kempe, Emeritus Professor of Drama Education from the University of Reading

Our Drama students took part in a documentary theatre workshop on the Aberfan disaster.

In October 1966, a colliery spoil tip collapsed onto Pantglas Junior School in South Wales, killing 144 people, 116 of them children. With the 60th anniversary coming up next month, it felt the right time to explore it.

Documentary theatre builds performance from real testimony, so students had to handle real people's experiences with care. It's a demanding skill and a valuable one for their devising work.

"We were really proud of the maturity and sensitivity they brought to it." Said Miss Duthie, Head of KS4
